Think on These Things…

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

“Finally brethren, whatever things are true… think on these things.” (Phil 4:8) So I ask you, what things are true? Frankly, that’s an area we can spend eternity in without ever getting to the other things Paul tells us to think about. It seems from the next verse that the promised reward for thinking on these things is that the “God of peace will be with you”.

Meditating on things that are true will produce peace. And peace is the state I personally need to be in to hear the still, small voice of God. If you are experiencing anxiety or lack of peace, take inventory of what you are meditating on. You may say that you are thinking a lot about the fact that you are in a terrible financial bind and that is the truth.

It may be true that you are in a financial bind, but there is a higher truth. The truth you are struggling with now is a temporary truth, but here’s an eternal truth for you to consider… “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD your God who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go.” (Isa 48:17)

Maybe you should spend a little time thinking on this and asking the Father to teach you how to profit not only from your challenging circumstance, but also how to profit so you can get out of the jam you are in. There are simply too many Scriptures I could list that give you practical, applicable insight to remedy your problem, but do you know them? Have you reviewed them? Are you thinking on them? God will speak to you in the midst of His word and give you everything you need for life and godliness! Whatever things are true… think on these things!

As a Man Thinks…

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Prov 23:7) What we think about predominately becomes our experience, either good or bad. It has been said many times, and I believe it’s true, that no man has committed adultery without first thinking about it – a lot. No married man just gets up one day, goes to the store to get bread, meets a woman in the bakery and breaks covenant with his wife and commits adultery that day.

The reality is the act has long been preceded with immoral thoughts which began as unsolicited suggestions that eventually were given consideration. In time, they were entertained and made welcome. Eventually, they were not just welcomed, but sought out. Those thoughts produced feelings in the realm of the heart and stirred the flesh until one day; it goes beyond thoughts to words, to glances and eventually the act he thought he would never commit. To the friends of the couple who broke up over this, they didn’t see it coming. They were shocked.

But it was inevitable. Thoughts follow input. Our heart follows our thoughts and as you probably know by now, 90% of any decision is made in the heart and motivated by emotional drivers. Let something simmer in the heart long enough and opportunity will present itself to turn into reality that which you have been giving haven to in the privacy of your inner sanctum, your heart.

I shared this example because it is real. Psychologists and marriage counselors agree this is not theoretical. It’s a fact. But there’s good news. This same process can work in the positive to dramatically impact your life for good. Join me next time as we examine how thinking the right things can produce an abundant harvest of good in our life. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.

Guard Your Heart

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flow the issues of life.” (Prov 4:23) This is no slight recommendation. It has to do with the subject we’ve been discussing… INPUT. What flows out of your life is in direct correlation to what you allow in your life. I’ve said it before: if you’re not happy with your life, look at the choices you’ve made in the past.

Yes, I know bad things happen to good people. Things so painful that are hard to even mention and they certainly weren’t our fault. I’ve buried my first born daughter and my step son. I know whereof I speak. I also know that what I choose to think upon affects my heart, my emotions, my well being, even my faith or lack thereof.

This verse clearly demonstrates the correlation between our input and our output. It’s not New Age. It’s ancient truth from the Rock of Ages. So, how do we guard our heart? It all goes back to what we allow through our eye gate, ear gate, etc. Pick any day this week and analyze how much time you spend taking care of responsibilities and how much time you had for sleep and then look at your discretionary time. You can actually make gains in each of these areas.

I know of people who play CD’s under their pillow at night while they go to sleep just to give positive input while they sleep. Others turn some of their responsibility time into productive INPUT time by listening to CD’s while driving to an appointment or doing repetitive work. As for discretionary time, well we feel we have earned that, and we have, so why squander it on INPUT that affects the issues of our life in a negative way? I’m not saying we shouldn’t enjoy entertaining programming, but let’s not be so entertainment focused that we accept things that pollute our hearts and steer our life subconsciously in a direction that misses the mark.

Let’s guard our hearts with all diligence!

P.S. I have two events to tell you about. I am speaking at the BusinessLeadershipSchool hosted by Strategic Christian Services and my mentor Dennis Peacocke in Santa Rosa, CA Feb 22 – 24. See www.scsbusiness.org for details.

On that same weekend in San Antonio, TX is another great conference geared towards folks who want their own family business operated online. Some remarkable speakers with phenomenal success stories and how to application there as well. See http://pink.familye-biz.com for details.

Monitor Your Input

Friday, February 16th, 2007

I want to continue the discussion today on the first thing that affects our results and that is the INPUT we allow through what we watch, listen to or read, etc. This one is so important that if we only focused on getting the right input, the desired result would be inevitable.

Stay with me a moment. Suppose you marinated your mind in the Scriptures, read and listened to teaching materials that inspired and instructed, avoided gossip, shut down negative and licentious input and spent time alone with the Father. Your thoughts would inescapably be centered in good things (Phi 4:8), which unavoidably get into your heart, from the abundance of which comes your words which steer your course of actions, determining your habits. Aren’t our consistent actions (habits) what produce the results we are experiencing? Not sure? Look in the mirror and see if you can guess what kind of consistent actions (or lack thereof) are evidenced by the result you see.

If you don’t like where you are, look where you’ve been. They’re connected. It’s painful, but true. However, we can change that - Right now. You’ve already made a good decision by reading this email/blog. Subscribe to others like Os Hillman’s TGIF. Before retiring for the evening in front of the television and watching many programs you don’t even like, set aside an hour and get some good input from others who have achieved what you want to achieve. Spend a few bucks and get some DVD’s like our very popular Taking Back the Gates conference featuring many highly successful Christian entrepreneurs.

In fact, we have been researching some absolutely outstanding sources of input. Ones that are significantly impacting my life and we plan on sharing them with you soon - Probably in March. The point is that there are many excellent sources of INPUT and we all need to partake of them more often.

To be continued…

Seven Elements for Realizing our Dreams

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

There are seven elements related to faith that I believe we need to examine if we want to grow in faith. Over the next few weeks, I will be developing these elements and looking for your feedback. (I get a lot of help from your comments and if you are not checking in on the blog to see what others have posted, you are missing out.)

The 7th element is the RESULT we are looking for. Most results are the product of HABITS (#6) or consistency or perseverance. Habits, of course, are the product of individual ACTIONS (#5). The 4th element consists of our WORDS. When we speak, not only do we steer our actions, but we also affect our HEART (#3) where our feelings and emotions reside. Our heart is fed by our THOUGHTS (#2) which are dominated by our INPUT (#1), what we allow in through the eye gate, ear gate, etc.

So what do we allow in? What do we read? Who do we listen to? What do we watch? All these things affect the results we are after. If you don’t like your results, look behind you. There’s a trail of choices that ultimately lead back to the input we allowed or the input we didn’t choose, but should have.

Don’t get on a guilt trip. Simply recognize where you are and how you got there and begin making better choices about your input. It will take some time, but good input will stimulate good thoughts that cook down to faith in the heart. Out of the abundance of your faith filled heart will come words, actions and habits that produce the desired results. It’s not complicated. I think we too often want quick results, miracles, etc because we are too immature as saints to learn obedience by the things we suffer and we fail to become “sons” who bear the Father’s heart, work where He’s working and co-create with Him.

Let’s Move Some Mountains…

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

What do you believe? And, where do you believe? In other words, is your belief merely an intellectual acknowledgement or do you really have it on the inside - in your heart? I am coming to the conclusion that we really only believe what we are able to manifest. For example, we say we believe God will provide all of our needs according to His riches in glory (Phil 4:19), but that belief necessitates a stepping out and acting as though it were true. And most of us don’t want to step out until the need is met, which of course doesn’t require faith.

I don’t think we are manifesting in our lives much of what we say we believe. But we can change that. We must first be honest with ourselves and then align ourselves with God’s Word.

The Bible says the just shall live by faith and without faith it is impossible to please God. Impossible. And faith without works is dead - Empty talk. It may be impressive talk, but dead nonetheless. Kind of like a fresh bouquet of red roses (today is Valentines Day) that looks pretty, but is dead when not connected to the life source. I think a lot of us have that kind of faith - fresh cut roses. It looks promising, even smells nice, but can produce nothing but a warm fuzzy feeling.

We need faith that is connected to the heart, rooted and grounded in love, born of the Spirit, carried by His Word and tested by the circumstances of our life. We need faith that will move mountains. I’m ready for this and I am going for it. Want to go there together? To be continued…

Who Did Jesus Recruit for His Sales Team? (Part 3)

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

“And learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls.” Matthew 11:29

We are finishing off our discussion on the three traits Jesus is looking for when choosing folks to spread His yoke of Scriptural teachings. He wanted people who were willing to work, willing to bear a burden but know their limits and lastly, people who were willing to learn.

Having a teachable spirit is critical. If you are recruiting someone and they don’t have this trait, move on to the next one. If they are not teachable, they will be big trouble for you - even if they already know more about the market than you.

It’s about humility. Jesus says he is meek and lowly in heart. By this, He is setting the example and He expects us to follow His example and learn from Him. When someone is not teachable, they are in pride and pride comes before a fall. In fact, Proverbs teaches that before honor is humility. And humility, when combined with the fear of the Lord, brings riches and honor and life.

Look for these traits when recruiting a sales team or any team for that matter and your success rate will definitely increase. You can hire folks without the training you wish they had, but if they are willing to work hard, recognize their limits and learn new things, it may be the best hiring decision you have made. I have a client whose company sells insurance. Their top sales rep for 2006 was a maid, cleaning rooms in a hotel before she took the job. A top copier sales rep I knew delivered bread before he took his first sales job. I could list many other examples of sales folks with extraordinary success who did not have the official pedigree their employers were initially looking for, but they had these three traits and were a smashing success!
