I think they are more like circles of intimacy with God whereby we learn to operate on His power and not our own, and to rest in Him and learn His ways as we mature in the Christian life. Our sin and undisciplined lifestyle put us outside the tent, (saved but unsanctified), while our obedience and consistency in doing what he has revealed puts us closer in...inside the three circles. Gladly, through Jesus we have access to the Holy of Holies on a moment by moment basis, but we must enter on bended knee in humility, recognizing who we are in Christ, and not trying to impose our agenda on His perfect plan for our lives.
