Separate to Cogitate

October 19th, 2007 | Michael Q. Pink

I have been discussing the seven strategies God built into the rainforest to deal with “pests” and how they relate so effectively to work. So far, we have discussed the following: (1) Eliminate the unnecessary (2) Automate the mundane (3) Delegate the routine (4) Designate your work and last week was number (5) Procrastinate the undefined.

Today, I want to introduce you to rule number (6) Separate to cogitate. In the rainforest, many plants wait until the dry season to put out their leaves. They are waiting for the pests to leave, for the crowds to dissipate, for the distractions to be minimal, for the tourists to go home. You get the idea. And when they are gone, the plants get busy.

Application: Have you ever worked on a holiday? Notice how much you got done? Easily twice as much, but more likely 5 - 10 times as much. If you can arrange your schedule, try working when others are not and then relax when they are working. You will be amazed at the difference! It might mean separating yourself for a season, going to a cabin or some retreat. Not only will you get more done, but you will enjoy the process far more!

Until next time, be fruitful, then multiply!

    Hey Mike,

    I do appreciate your mindfulness in choosing just the right “Rainforest”
    metaphors and word pictures to get your points across. They are VERY
    effective for easy and effortless principle retention. Thanks!

    Hey Geary;

    Thanks for your feedback. I am grateful that you and hopefully others are getting value out of the rainforest metaphors. Blessings.
