It was just about 2 years ago that I sat across from my good friend over a cup of coffee in a local restaurant. We had met early in the morning to talk about some of the challenges we faced in profitability in our businesses. He, the CEO of a software company servicing clients on multiple continents, and I, operating a marketing consultancy.

While we had been good friends for years, something developed out of that conversation that brought our friendship to an entirely new level of intimacy. I knew, for example, that he had been born overseas — the son of missionaries to some of the darkest parts of the world. I also knew — having met his father and mother — the level of devotion to Christ that had caused them to risk their very lives in service to the Call of God.

He knew that I had been born into a devoted Christian family here in the States — that my father had been a pastor when I was younger, and that my mother’s father had been in the ministry since shortly after World War II. He knew that our family was in church every time the doors were open.

What neither of us knew until that day, however, was that both of us dealt with an inner struggle with success. It seemed that we both had always reached a place where that “big breakthrough” had eluded us just when it seemed to be in our grasp. We learned that both of us were fighting against inner programming — instilled in us from childhood — that somehow there was something “wrong” with hitting a big win financially and in business. Both of us had come to understand that we were serving God in the marketplace in response to His call on our lives… and yet we both had run up against seemingly impenetrable barriers.

We began meeting on a regular basis to explore the roots and the nature of the battle between heart and head — between Biblical understanding and the traditions that seemed to be infused in our thinking. What we discovered and what God has shown us — individually and jointly — has been nothing short of amazing.

That was my first thought when I heard that Michael Pink was doing research in the rainforests of Panama.

 Last week, we pointed out that rainforests have a job. They are the lungs of the planet, exchanging Oxygen for Carbon Dioxide and sustaining life on this planet. We can’t afford for the rainforest to be inefficient, to fall down on the job or to be ineffective. Fortunately, we do not have to worry about the rainforest defaulting (as long as we don’t cut it all down), because it operates by a series of laws or processes that make it very efficient.

When we understand what makes the rainforest efficient, we can apply those same principles to our lives and garner similar results. Last week, we talked about the first law of productivity… Eliminate the Unnecessary. Today, I want to talk about the second law… Automate the Mundane. In short, systemize those things that must be done routinely and in a precise way.

Continuing our series on 7 Strategies for Fighting Pests, we’ve discussed at some length the concept of leaf toughness as being a picture or model of saying “no” to pests that would consume us. Another way of looking at leaf toughness is the idea of setting boundaries. Everyone needs boundaries, not only to keep you out of trouble, but to keep trouble from invading your space.

You must learn to set boundaries for yourself, what you will allow and what you won’t. You must set boundaries for your coworkers, your staff, even your boss. Yes, there are boundaries that must be set for your family and friends too. Boundaries have two sides to them. The first side is the inside consisting of everything you want inside that territory, be that your time territory, your financial territory, your influence territory, etc. The second side, is the outside consisting of everything that wants to get inside your territory and consume your time, your finances and/or your stuff!

Pests consume what we produce so that at the end of the day we have little to show for our efforts. In previous emails we’ve discussed the various kinds of pests that eat away at your day, that upon honest reflection, we really could have made better choices to limit or even eliminate their effect. Last week we discussed how leaf toughness, a rainforest strategy for deterring pests was analogous to personally getting tough and saying “No” to those pests, no matter how nice, friendly and persuasive they are if they are going to pull you away from being productive.

Here’s the thing on that… It’s easy to say “no” to the obvious bad choices, like going to a movie in the middle of your workday. What is difficult and what requires wisdom is having to make a good choice between worthy but competing time commitments. Or having to make a choice about a new but unexpected opportunity. It’s not as easy as it may seem. To make a good choice, consider asking a few questions… Is this consistent with my primary purpose as I understand it? Does this contribute to the vision I am working towards? If so, is it more important or more strategic or more timely than what I am currently working on?
